Garden Office and Den in Wimbledon

Project Details

A mixed use building at the bottom of the garden for a client in Wimbledon, London. The building replaced an old shed and part of the garden that was rarely used. The building is used as a teenage den, office and store room. It also includes a small toilet and basin for convenience and avoids the need to keep nipping back to the house. A small deck area was created at the front rather than stepping straight from the grass and into the building.

Challenges and Solutions

As with most buildings where there are no existing services available for a local connection, we had to find a route from the house. This included the waste from the small toilet in the garden room. Fortunately, there was a drain connection already in existence at the house but we had to hand dig the trenches for waste pipes and electrical cables as it was not possible to get in a digger. This is another good example of a terraced house in a busy street where only access through the house was possible.

Whilst we like to install buildings where there is plenty of space for us to work and access to gardens are easy, we do relish the more challenging site as they are both rewarding and often mean more to the client where space is a premium. We were able to design in all of the client’s requirements which did include building very close to the boundaries of the property. We used our fire-resistant SIP construction on three of the elevations and fortunately the clients budget included Western Red Cedar cladding to the front elevation and secret door. One of the more exotic cladding materials and whilst an expensive option it does compliment any garden building.
