Making Best Use of Space in West Yorkshire

Project Details

One of our smaller buildings and designed to fit on a small part of the garden at a client house in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. Space was a premium especially with a bedroom in the house being used as an office. This effectively gave our client an extra room and only a few paces from the front door.

Challenges and Solutions

We had the challenge of a sloping site and it being in close proximity to the boundary. It wasn’t financially viable to level the site level as this would have involved building retaining walls to support the higher ground. We suggested to the client that we could accommodate the slope by introducing steel posts buried in the ground at strategic positions that were then bolted to our insulated floor frames. It was one of the first building that we introduced this method of dealing with sloping ground and one that we use effectively at the design stage on many projects.

The building was erected in 5 days with a team of three people and filled the brief perfectly giving our client that extra space that was so valued. The client chose Thermowood for the external cladding giving it a soft and organic appearance. Thermowood is a heat treated softwood giving it exceptional resistance to the elements. The anthracite doors and widows contrast very well with the cladding, soffit and fascia and, when lit with the external wall lights in the dark hours, the building softens even more and blends in perfectly with its surroundings.
